The National Citizen Party (NCP) demonstrated “poor judgment” in deciding not to attend the signing of the July National Charter, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Friday.
“During our talks with them [NCP] and in the consensus commission meetings, they had been positive on almost all matters.
Whatever differences existed could have been discussed further. We could have sat again and resolved them.
I think it was unwise of them not to sign; otherwise, they would have joined us today,” Fakhrul told BBC Bangla after the signing ceremony at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Fakhrul described NCP’s absence as a “misunderstanding” rather than a sign of division.
“They will realise their mistake and eventually return to the right course,” he said.
Calling the signing ceremony a “historic milestone,” the BNP leader noted, “Today’s event showed once again that our political parties can act responsibly and unite when the nation and the state demand it.”
He expressed hope that parties yet to sign the charter might still do so through continued dialogue.
When asked whether disagreements would persist, Fakhrul said, “Differences and debates exist in every country and in every age. Unfortunately, we tend to enjoy arguments.”
Despite these differences, he hailed the July Charter as a “significant accomplishment” and said more discussions would follow to ensure its full implementation.
