One dead in clash over cow theft

A Youngman was killed, and at least 40 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups reportedly over a cow theft attempt in Kishoreganj’s Itnahaor upazila on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Ruman Miah (22), son of Md. Jalaluddin in Gazaria village of Itna upazila. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Itna Police Station, Md Zafar Iqbal confirmed the incident.

The clash erupted around 1.30 pm and lasted till 5.30 at Gazaria village under Mriga union.

Locals, and Police sources, there had been a long-standing land dispute between Jasim Uddin and Karim Miah.

The conflict escalated two days ago when a follower of Karim allegedly attempted to steal a cow from a house belonging to one of Jasim’s followers.

Although locals tried to mediate the matter, the two groups locked into a clash on Sunday afternoon . During the incident, RumanMiah a follower of Jasim, was hit by a sharp weapon.

He was taken to Osmani Medical College Hospital (OMCH), Sylhet in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries Sunday night at 10:30pm.

The dead body was sent to mourge for an autopsy, OC added. The injured people were admitted to government hospital, and private clinics.

When contact to Superintendent of Police (SP) told the New Nation that, additional police have been deployed at the village , and the process to file a case over the incident is underway.”
