Teachers on strike for 4-point demand

Hossainpur Correspondent :

Teachers and staff of Hossainpur Women’s College are observing a work abstention in line with the nationwide indefinite strike, demanding fulfilment of their four-point charter including a 20pc house rent allowance on basic pay and a medical allowance of Tk 1,500. As part of the protest, they have boycotted classes and examinations.

The programme began on Monday morning, resulting in the suspension of all academic activities, including classes and examinations, at Hossainpur Women’s College.

The strike is being observed under the banner of the MPO-Listed Education Nationalisation Demand Alliance.

According to the organisers, the programme was also declared in protest against the police attack on demonstrating teachers in Dhaka on Sunday. Like other parts of the country, teachers at Hossainpur Women’s College have been present on campus but refrained from teaching.

On Sunday, during a sit-in programme in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka demanding a 20pc house rent allowance and other benefits, clashes broke out between police and teachers, with police reportedly using sound grenades.

The incident sparked tension across various areas. Later, at the call of the alliance leaders, the teachers moved to the Central Shaheed Minar, where they announced the continuation of their movement.

Teachers of the college stated, “The sooner the interim government accepts our justified demands, the sooner we will resume our classes with the students.

We urge the government to promptly issue an official notification granting a 20pc house rent allowance, Tk 1,500 medical allowance, and 75pc festival bonus for the staff.”

Hossainpur Upazila Secondary Education Officer, Abul Kalam Azad, said that although MPO-listed educational institutions in the upazila remain open, teachers have refrained from conducting classes to press home their rightful demands.
