Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has left New York for Dhaka after completing his official engagements at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
He departed John F. Kennedy International Airport at 11:10 pm local time on Tuesday (9:10 am Bangladesh time Wednesday).
Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, and Ambassador to the United States, Tareq Md Ariful Islam, saw him off at the airport, according to the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
Dr. Yunus had traveled to New York on 22 September, accompanied by senior political leaders, to participate in the UNGA.
During his stay, he held meetings with Sergio Gor, the US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and current Ambassador to India, and offered condolences to the family of Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi-American police officer killed in a recent shooting.
He addressed a high-level UN side event on “Social Business, Youth and Technology,” delivered a speech before the General Assembly, and met with former presidents, prime ministers, and institutional leaders from 11 countries.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed full support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition and reform agenda during the visit.
Dr. Yunus also urged international human rights activists to make more frequent visits to Bangladesh.
Concluding his trip, the Chief Adviser spoke at the high-level conference on “The Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar” at the UN Headquarters.
