Feni district has been rehabilitated after the last year’s terrible flood at the initiative of the Red Crescent at a cost of 10 crore taka.
This information was given at an evaluation meeting held at a restaurant in the city on Sunday night. A.D.C (General) Md. Ismail Hossain was the chief guest at the meeting.
He said, “Flood control is difficult in Feni’s geographical position. Each river brings a lot of silt. The water holding capacity of these rivers is decreasing. For this, river management is necessary. More work is needed on this.
Organisations like the Red Crescent can do some work. People need to be made aware. People need to be made aware of high VT when building houses in relatively low-lying areas of Fulgazi-Parshuram. There will be more floods in Feni. For this, rescue equipment needs to be provided on an urgent basis.”
Feni Red Crescent Unit Vice Chairman Ziauddin Ahmed Mister presided over the event, while Mizanur Rahman, Director of DR Department of Red Crescent Headquarters, Assistant Director Shahinur Rahman, IFRC Senior Manager Hasibul Bari Rajib, Livelihood Manager Mehedi Hasan Shishir were special guests.
Under the direction of Abdur Halim Julhas, Deputy Youth Chief of Feni District Youth Red Crescent, Feni Red Crescent Unit Executive Member A.N.M. Abdur Rahim, Muhammad Fazlul Haque, Rashid Ahmed Majumder, Deputy Head of Disaster and Humanitarian Division of Youth Red Crescent Unit Fatema Akhter, Volunteer Nazmul Islam, Amjad Hossain also spoke.
Representative of Community Development Society of Chagalnaiya Upazila, Israt Jahan of Farhadnagar Union, Durga Rani Das, Nurul Alam, Jabed Hossain of Parashuram Upazila also spoke.
Among others, the meeting was attended by the Deputy Collector of the District Administration, Zimran Mohammad Sayek, Assistant Commissioner Ashok Vikram Chakma, Executive Members of the Red Crescent Unit Arif Azam and Abdullah Al Jobayer, Unit Level Officer Abdul Mannan and other youth members.
NDRC members made a group presentation on the rehabilitation activities of the Red Crescent after the flood in the meeting.
The Red Crescent informed that 777 families have been rehabilitated in different areas of the district, including houses for 227 families, latrines for 311 families and livelihoods for 239 families. Food assistance was provided to 10,000 families and cash assistance to 6,500 families.
In addition, 5,500 families were given 570 pieces of triplex, 23 spots were provided with free medical care for 12 days, hygiene kits were distributed to 5,800 families, 550 hygiene kits were distributed to children from grades 1 to 5 in primary schools, 30 new tubewells were constructed, 20 old tubewells were repaired, 7,600 fruit and medicinal plant seedlings were distributed, 469 people were given 6,500 taka each, and 10 types of winter vegetable seeds were given to 300 families. In total, more than 10 crore taka was spent.
