Indonesian students are staging protests at the parliament building in the capital Jakarta on Thursday, a student group says, as a proposed meeting with the government on massive demonstrations that have already left 10 people dead is yet to materialise.
Led by students, workers and rights groups, protests over police violence and state spending priorities are spreading across the world’s third-largest democracy after a police vehicle hits and kills a motorcycle taxi driver.
The demonstrations at times turn violent. Rights groups say 10 people have died and over 1,000 people are injured in incidents of looting and rioting. They condemn the use of force by security forces.
