The journey of the American-based television channel MTV (Music Television), which has been a symbol of music and youth culture, is coming to an end.
However, all five of its channels that will be closed are from the UK branch.
They include – ‘MTV Music’, ‘MTV 80s’, ‘MTV 90s’, ‘Club MTV’ and ‘MTV Live’.
Paramount Global, the owner of MTV, has announced that these channels will be off the air from December 31 of this year.
They said that they have planned to reduce the size of the television network and increase investment in digital platforms from now on.
MTV’s journey began in the United States in 1981 with the slogan ‘I want my MTV’. Later, it spread all over the world.
It began broadcasting in the UK in 1997 and in India in 1996. This channel was once a symbol of music, fashion and lifestyle for young people.
But times have changed. In the age of YouTube, Spotify and social media, viewers have moved away from television.
Former MTV video jockey Simone Angle said, “It’s a difficult time. MTV wasn’t just about music, it was about dance, fashion and the meeting place for young people.”
However, ‘MTV India’ is still operating in India, where popular reality shows like ‘Roadies’ and ‘Splitsvilla’ are still favorites of young viewers, and the channel has maintained its popularity, at least to some extent.
