Dengue claims five more lives

Staff Reporter:

Health authorities on Tuesday reported five more dengue-related deaths and 841 new infections recorded in the past 24 hours, indicating that the mosquito-borne disease continues to spread across Bangladesh despite ongoing control measures.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), of the newly diagnosed patients, 125 were admitted in Barishal division, 106 in Chattogram, 214 in Dhaka division excluding the capital, 128 in areas under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), and 173 in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). In addition, 26 cases were reported from Khulna division, 19 from Mymensingh, 47 from Rangpur, and three from Sylhet division.

With these latest figures, the cumulative number of dengue cases reported since the beginning of this year has risen to 56,257, while the death toll has reached 238. Health officials noted that though the number of new infections has slightly decreased compared to the peak months of July and August, the virus remains a major public health concern as sporadic outbreaks persist in several districts.

Last year, Bangladesh recorded its deadliest dengue outbreak on record, claiming 575 lives and infecting 101,214 people nationwide. The DGHS has urged city corporations and local authorities to intensify mosquito control drives and public awareness campaigns to prevent a resurgence as weather conditions continue to favor mosquito breeding.
