BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Sunday conveyed greetings to the Hindu community on the occasion of Sharadiya Durga Puja, urging everyone to celebrate in peace and harmony.
He also called upon law enforcement agencies to remain alert against any attempts to disrupt communal amity.
In a video message, Tarique Rahman said, “On the occasion of Sharadiya Durga Puja, I extend my warmest greetings to our Hindu brothers and sisters. People of different faiths celebrate their religious festivals with joy and devotion across every section of society. This reflects the richness of Bangladesh’s long tradition of religious coexistence, cultural harmony, and social values. Such practices nurture friendship, unity, goodwill, and brotherhood among all communities.”
Reaffirming BNP’s stance, he said, “Religion belongs to the individual, but the state belongs to all. Every citizen, regardless of faith, has the right to live in peace and security.”
Cautioning against any attempt to incite unrest, he added, “I urge the country’s law enforcement agencies to stay vigilant so that no one can create communal tension or jeopardize security during this sacred festival, as was witnessed under the previous fascist rule.”
Speaking directly to the Hindu community, Tarique encouraged them to observe the festival “with joy, enthusiasm, and peace of mind,” while spreading “goodwill, unity, and harmony.”
He reminded that the Constitution guarantees equal protection for all citizens – believers and non-believers alike – and that it is the duty of the state to uphold this right.
Quoting a Hadith, Tarique Rahman added that the Prophet (PBUH) strictly warned against oppression of non-Muslims under state protection, cautioning that such acts would face the harshest judgment in the hereafter.
