Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Rtd.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain said on Sunday that Bangladesh Shipping Corporation’s (BSC) initiative to procure two modern bulk carriers with its own financing marks a historic milestone in the country’s maritime sector.
“This is the first time in the country’s history that BSC is purchasing ships using its own funds,” he said, reports UNB.
The adviser came up with the remarks while speaking at the signing ceremony of a ship supply agreement between BSC and Hellenic Dry Bulk Ventures LLC held at a city hotel.
He added that the two ships will increase BSC’s annual income by Tk 150 crore and expand its transport capacity by around 120,000 DWT.
He further said that the vessels, built under German license in China, are environmentally friendly, energy-efficient and meet the latest IMO standards.
European and Japanese equipment, including pumps from Spain and compressors from Norway, have been used.
The first ship is expected to be delivered in October 2025, followed by the second one in December 2025.
