12 Hijras Arrested in Narayanganj for Extortion and Assaulting Migrants

Staff Correspondent :
Police in Rupganj, Narayanganj, have arrested 12 hijras on charges of
extortion and assaulting expatriates on the highway.
The arrestees are Kajoli of Aighartekpara, Iman of Khalpar, Koheli
Hijra, Ali Shah, Sinha, Mim, Mou, Tuni, Nishi Akter, Chameli, Natasha,
and Mala. They were picked up on Wednesday (September 17)
afternoon from Habib Nagar in Kanchan Municipality and Fazur Bari
Mor in Rupganj Union.
Confirming the arrests, Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC)
Tarikul Islam said “For a long time they have been harassing people
around Shaheed Farhan Faiyaz Bridge, Kanchan Bridge, and Fazur Bari
Mor. Even then, considering humanitarian aspects, we refrained from
taking action. On September 15, they stopped a car carrying expatriates,
demanded money, and physically assaulted them. Following a
complaint, we launched an operation and arrested them from Fazur Bari
Mor and Kanchan Bridge. A case has been filed against them for
extortion.”
Locals reported that young men disguised themselves as hijras and
carried out extortion along the Asian Highway, Fazur Bari Mor, and
Kanchan Bridge areas. Their main targets were cars carrying returning
expatriates from the airport. They demanded hefty sums from migrants,
often holding them hostage for money. The harassment had become
unbearable for the public.
