Artistes’ protests against Israel’s brutality and genocide against Palestine have become even more severe this time. Artistes have taken a stronger stance. Around 1,800 artistes from various industries around the world, including Hollywood, have announced that they will no longer work with any Israeli institution or production company.
Many of these artistes and filmmakers are winners of various awards, including Oscars, BAFTAs, Emmys, and Palme d’Ors. Last Monday, an organisation called Film Workers for Palestine released a statement announcing the decision.
Around 1,800 actors and filmmakers signed the statement.
The list of producers includes Yorgos Lanthimos, Ava DuVernay, Adam McKay, Boots Riley, Emma Seligman, Joshua Oppenheimer, Mike Leigh, etc.
The list of actors includes Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, Ayo Edbury, Lily Gladstone, Mark Ruffalo, Hannah Einbinder, Peter Sarsgaard, Aimee Lou Wood, Papa Acedu, Gael Garcia Bernal, Riz Ahmed, Melissa Barrera, Cynthia Nixon, Tilda Swinton, Javier Bardem, Joe Alwyn, Josh O’Connor, etc.
In the statement, they announced that in addition to refraining from acting in Israeli-produced films, they will also not participate in any film festivals held in the country.
As a result, these artistes will not be seen at important festivals such as the Jerusalem Film Festival, Haifa International Film Festival, Dokaviv or Tel Aviv International Documentary Film Festival and TLV Fest. There will be no films produced or acted by them.
“At this critical moment, when governments of various countries are abetting this genocide, we will do everything we can to stop this horror,” the Film Workers for Palestine statement said. “Israeli film production and distribution companies, sales agents, and organizations associated with the country’s cinema have never supported the rights of the Palestinian people.”
Actress Hannah Einbinder said, “What we have seen in Gaza for two years is heartbreaking. As a Jewish American citizen, I believe we should do everything we can to stop the genocide. At this critical moment, in light of the failure of our leaders, artists must step up. We must stop working with Israel.”
