S A Shofiee, Sylhet :
While all the media across the country are busy with the much-discussed white stone looting incident in Kompaniganj, rumors have been circulating that the main accused in the case of killing Raihan Ahmed under torture at a police outpost in Sylhet, expelled police Sub-Inspector (SI) Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, has fled the country.
This rumor has become even stronger, especially since he did not surrender on time as per the court’s instructions.
Akbar was released from Sylhet Central Jail on August 11, the day after he was granted bail by the High Court. Then, on August 14, the High Court’s Chamber Judge’s Court suspended his bail and ordered him to surrender to the lower court within 10 days, but he did not appear.
Besides, the case, which was pending in the Sylhet Metropolitan Judge’s Court, was scheduled for Wednesday (September 3). But he did not appear in court today, said Sylhet District Judge’s Public Prosecutor (PP) Ashiq Uddin.
He said that the hearing of the case ended this afternoon in Akbar’s absence. As a result, the fear that Akbar might flee the country has become stronger.
