5 of a family burnt in N’ganj cylinder explosion

Staff Correspondent :

Five members of the same family, including child, were burned in a gas cylinder explosion in Narayanganj.

The injured are the household head Manob Chowdhury (40), his wife Bacha Chowdhury (38), and their three daughters Tinni (12), Munni (14) and Mauri (6).

According to resident surgeon Dr. Shawon bin Rahman of the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, Manob suffered burns over 70% of his body, his wife 45%, Tinni 22%, Munni 28% and Mauri 36%.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 4, 2025, inside a ground-floor room of a three-story building on Lane No. 3 of the BSCIC industrial area in Kanchpur, Sonargaon. After the blast, locals pulled the family out and rushed them to the hospital.

Neighbour Sabinoy Das, who helped take them to the hospital, said Manob worked as a security guard for a pharmaceutical company. The family rented the ground-floor room, which contained both the kitchen and the bathroom. In the early morning a sudden, loud explosion engulfed them in flames. “I quickly arranged a vehicle and brought them to the hospital,” he said.

He added that none of them were in good condition and doctors were asking for blood donations. “I’m running around to find donors,” he said.
Senior Station Officer Jahangir of the Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence’s Kanchpur station said a cooking stove was inside the room and a gas cylinder was found there.

No other gas connection to the stove was discovered. Because the room was on the ground floor, the family likely kept doors and windows closed at night out of fear of theft, allowing leaked gas from the cylinder to accumulate like in a chamber. The leak then found a source of ignition in the morning, causing the explosion.

It is worth noting that low-quality and defective cylinders are increasing gas accidents in the industrial areas of Narayanganj. Alongside loss of life and property, the number of people suffering severe burns is rising. Despite the steady stream of tragic incidents, people remain careless in their use of gas cylinders.
