Srijit making film on Sarat Chandra Chatterjee

Entertainment Desk :

Popular West Bengal director Srijit Mukherjee’s new film is about Sarat Chandra Chatterjee and his much-talked-about novel ‘Pather Dabi’.
Next August will mark the centenary of the publication of the novel ‘Pather Dabi,’ written in the context of the anti-British movement.

Keeping this occasion in mind, Srijit is making a film titled ‘Emperor vs. Sarat Chandra’. The film’s director announced the film recently.

The central character of the novel ‘Pather Dabi’, Sabyasachi, was modeled after a famous revolutionary of the time by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Sabyasachi performed one revolutionary act after another under the noses of the British, but the then rulers were unable to catch him.

After Sarat Chandra’s ‘Pather Dabi’ was published on 31 August 1926, the anti-British movement intensified. As a result, the book was banned in January 1927.

The banning of the novel ‘Pather Daayam,’ and how opposition to the ruler at that time or even today leads to terrible consequences – these are the themes that Srijit has created for the film ‘Emperor vs. Sarat Chandra’.

Apart from Sarat Chandra, it will also feature prominent figures of the time, including Rabindranath Tagore and Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das.

Srijit said, “I am making the film based on various events and personalities surrounding the writing period of ‘Pather Dabi’, the politics of that time, and the banning of the novel.”

The film ‘Emperor vs. Sarat Chandra’ is being jointly produced by SVF and Daag Creative Media.
